COPLINK Q&A.... some common questions and answers
As we are unable to detail everything about the COPLINK software
suite on this website, and as we often get asked some basic questions about
COPLINK, we it useful to list just a few of the common questions that we get asked,
and to help you, we have also provided concise answers to them. Hopefully
these points will answer some obvious and basic questions, however we would
certainly be pleased to answer
any other questions you may have, please contact us by phone or email, the
details are available at the bottom of this page.
Q. We have applications
running on many different platforms. Will COPLINK be able to
link into data from all of these?
A. Yes. COPLINK uses JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) to access
any data source over a standard TCP/IP network. This enables
COPLINK to connect to any industry standard database accessible
on the network. It can also link into existing data warehouses.
|
Q. Many of the systems within my organisation are legacy
systems, can COPLINK work with these?
A. Normally suppliers of the legacy
systems can provide a data access layer through which a JDBC
connection can be established, COPLINK already works with
several legacy systems in the US.
|
|
Q. I am planning to upgrade and replace existing applications in
the near future. How will COPLINK handle this migration?
A. This is just a case of changing
data mappings within the COPLINK product, so any upgrades will
require only minimal work.
|
Q. Can COPLINK access databases located in other UK police
forces, such as several neighbouring forces, plus can it also
access national data sources.
A. Yes. COPLINK can access data
sources located outside of your own force using several methods
of secure connectivity and COPLINK can also access central or
national data sources. COPLINK in the US provides
dynamic access to the central FBI computer data.
|
Q. Is there any limitation to the number of data sources COPLINK
can use?
A. No, there is no limit to the
number of data sources COPLINK can use, you are able to
establish many data source links with both large and small data
sources, that can be located anywhere.
|
Q. How long has the COPLINK range of products been on the
market?
A. COPLINK was operational in a test
mode at Tucson Police Dept (US) starting in 1998. The first
installation outside of Arizona was in Polk County, Iowa. That
node became fully operational in October 2002. In
late
2003 COPLINK was introduced into the UK with Orbitron
Technologies Ltd.
|
Q. What police organisations are using COPLINK products?
A. Well quite a few, including:
Tucson, Arizona; Phoenix, Arizona; Huntsville, Texas; Des
Moines, Iowa; West Des Moines; Iowa; Ankeny, Iowa; Boston,
Massachusetts; Redmond, Washington; Spokane, Washington; police
departments. Polk County, Iowa sheriff's department;
Montgomery County, Maryland county police. Installations in
progress: State of Alaska; Henderson County, North Carolina;
Shawnee County, Kansas (three county, four city departments);
Hennepin County, Minnesota (includes Minneapolis), San Diego
County, California (41 total agencies); Pima County, Arizona
(part of Tucson). Others already looking at using COPLINK,
include Los Angeles and Philadelphia police departments.
|
Q. How much will it cost to implement COPLINK in my
organisation?
A. COPLINK pricing is based on
force\agency size. In addition, the customer must supply an
enterprise-level RDBMS (Oracle 8i or above; MS SQL Server 2000)
and server to host the COPLINK database, we can advise you
hardware specification. COPLINK is a modular product with
several options, though detailed quotations for software
installation, data source linking\mapping, personnel training and
compete support are available from KCC’s authorised UK
distributor\integrator Orbitron Technologies Limited.
|
Q. What level of security is built into the COPLINK products?
A. COPLINK requires an authorised
user to be entered into the user table before access is
possible. A user is assigned a default password for their
initial login. If a user forgets their password, it requires a
new default password be issued, since not even the system
administrator can read the binary-coded password. Users may be
granted access to different program modules (e.g., COPLINK
Connect, COPLINK Detect, COPLINK Administration, COPLINK Active
Agent, etc.). Users can also be assigned to User Groups. User
Groups are used to control access to restricted information.
COPLINK has two data restriction levels: Level ONE allows all
users to know that data relevant to their query exists, however,
they cannot see the actual data. They are provided with a
contact person or office for further information. A user
assigned to a group that is cleared for access to the restricted
information will see the data. Level TWO restriction allows
access only to members of user groups that have access
privileges. No other user even knows the data exists. If data
restrictions are implemented in COPLINK, a user must belong to a
group that has access privileges in order to see the data.
Non-group users will not see the data, or know of its existence,
depending on the level of security.
|
Q. My organisation uses mobile technology to access and record
data. Will the COPLINK product run on hand held\mobile devices
(PDA)?
A. COPLINK Mobile uses a sub-set of
COPLINK query data to enable hand-held or mobile
applications with limited bandwidth to access COPLINK
information, plus additional features are currently being
developed and this version should be available in 2006.
|
Q. My organisation uses many smaller Microsoft Access databases,
will COPLINK be able to use this data.
A. Yes, COPLINK can consolidate data
from a wide variety of sources, including MS Access
databases. Alternatively we offer a service to combine all these
many small data sources into one more manageable database.
|
Q. Does the COPLINK application run on the same server as the
database?
A. It is possible to do this, however,
we would recommend a separate application server is used. We
can always provide a hardware specification for you based upon
your particular data requirements.
|
Q. I have looked at the COPLINK demo and note that this
is specifically designed for American police forces. Is there a
UK version of COPLINK available?
A. Yes. This version is currently
being developed by Knowledge Computing Corporation in direct
conjunction with Orbitron Technologies and will be available
within the next few weeks.
|
Q. I noted that COPLINK already comes complete with several
populated databases, what are these and are they applicable to
the UK?
A. As part of our standard COPLINK
installation we provide the latest copies of data (FBI sourced)
of ALL motor vehicles and firearms manufactured everywhere in
the world, which contains comprehensive descriptive details
including serial numbers. This information includes both motor
vehicles and firearms for the UK. In addition we have designed
COPLINK with the future in mind, we have already provided the
capability for it to store and access DNA database records.
